One thing that is sorely missing from Kalarsys is a formal system for shields. There are some systems that are in use in The After Chronicles and even in core book games, but there is no official system.
So Zain and I decided to finally come up with one! And post it here for reference and to collect some feedback.
--------------------------------------------
Shields
Shields are used to block incoming attacks, rendering them (relatively) harmless. Instead of jumping out of the way, a character equipped with a shield can use it to deflect attacks, thus preventing damage.
Blocking with a shield requires the character to spend an action to bring the shield up. They must also declare which direction they are blocking in. Until their next turn, all attacks coming in from a 90 degree arc in front of that shield may be blocked. By spending an action, the character can block an amount of attacks equal to their shield skill. Both actions can be spent during a turn to double this amount, but obviously they can't do anything else that turn.
To determine if an attack has been blocked, the attacker's weapon ACC is rolled against the defender's Block. Block is is calculated by adding the character's shield skill to the shield's block bonus.
Each shield has a Strength requirement, and if a character does not meet this requirement, they are not strong enough to move the shield to meet incoming attacks, making it unusable. Also, shields tend to be quite heavy, so while a character is using one, they take a penalty to their Dexterity. Generally, the heavier a shield, the higher the Strength requirement, the higher the Dexterity penalty, and the higher the Block bonus.
Here are some sample shields to play around with:
Alright, everyone, go ahead and playtest this then rip it apart with criticism!
