Just a few questions and concerns I have that Ive discussed with ltpwn. he brought up a few points and some of them I think are valid. The first and most important deal with how the race based abilities are set up.
First off I dont think "Arts" should be race based for phadiasins (sp?). Maybe their culture values arts, maybe some of the greatest artisans of all kinds come from within their race but I dont see how an ability of artistic talent, particularly one you get to pick, should qualify, and in fact goes against the very "logic" that dictates how a particular race get a particular advantage.
Instead I suggest swimming be the other race base skill. As of now it is simply assumed that they can swim as a result of where they are located centraly on a map, and due to gills. By that should we assume golaiths should be able to climb without actually having that, or that shades given their culture, and body structure would be stealthy. Also I think that it needs to fall under if one has to so do they all. In a recent story the talespinner had a player get into a situation wherein a character was attempting to save someone from drowning in a lake or something. The player was asked whether or not his chacter could swim. He didn't have the advantage and so was penalized for it. Much the same as climbing for the goliaths is listed and monitered so too should ALL skill regardless of what they are. On another note personally, as fun as having a character that can play an instrument, or paint it feels like a waste of an advantage point in character creation that could be used for something much more useful to combat, or dungeon crawling.
The next point gets a bit more general but still deals with how the race based abilities are set up. As it stands now anyone could take a race advantage that wasn't theirs. A human taking stealth for example. As it is now a shade would level Stealth at 10 exp per bubble, a human requires double that. To me this does not make sense. The logic is that a shade is genetically attuned to stealth, that is to say that stealth has become an integral part to who they are (note this is an example). The race based advantage of stealth is not limited by INT as a result of a Shades very DNA being disposed to having skill in stealth. However you must spend the same amount of experience to increase it as you would to learn any other skill, be it a weapon proficency, a class ability, or anything else.
I suggest to fix this that race based skills be reduced to 5 exp per bubble, and that others see it as any other skill. Perhaps as an "advanced rule" races that would have a physical or cultural opposite to the skill could require 15 exp. Now it would seem as though the race based skills would level to quickly that way and I have to admit that yes they probobly would, but it would be tempered by the fact that everthing else would for quite some time even at 20 exp per session suffer greatly because of it, and if we enforce a rule of if you didn't use it you cant level it and even limit the amount by how MUCH you use a given skill determining the amount of bubbles you can fill in it slows to a reasonable level. It just doesn't seem right to penalize a player for wanting a skill outside their own race that really will never be mastered, or by making them wait to level by a single bubble every session so that their stats and other skills suffer.
That is all for now. I leave the floor open.
