Face front true believers. This is my review of the newest in a line of Spider-man franchise games.
Lets start off with some of the polish. Stan Lee (that's right the creator of Spider-man) narrorates cutscenes not all of them but the story-line base at the end of the 3 seperate acts gives it a nice little touch. The graphics themselves are par for the course during these cutscenes making them quite refined. Graphics during gameplay also live up to standards set by prior titles.
The story starts with The Amazing Spider-man stopping Mysterio from stealing "The Tablet of Order and Chaos" and in doing so shatters not only it but the fabric of reality. Madame Web hits the stage telling the Web-head he fucked up big time in more and nicer words. Then its off to save the universe with the help of Noir Spider-man, 2099 Spider-man, and Ultimate Spider-man. After a short tutorial, with bad puns through out and in which we learn that not all Spider-men are created equal you traverse through the game taking on some bad guys that will do there damndest to kill you in cliche ways in the Amazing universe you take on Kraven the Hunter, Flint Marko the Sandman, and the Unstoppable Juggernaut. The Noir universe features circus freaks turned underground mobsters Hammerhead, The Vulture, and Norman Osbourne as The Goblin. In 2099 Miguel O'Harra aka Spider-man takes on The Hobgoblin, Scorpion, and a FEMALE Doctor Octopus. Ultimate enemies give you a shock with Electro, put you on live television with Deadpool, and destroy a S.H.E.I.L.D. base full of zombies and robots with Carnage. Ending with a final tag-team clash for reality itself with Mysterio.
Time for something truly important gameplay. First thing is that it is a level based linear platformer. No open world here. The levels are catered to the Boss within them and show it. Each level has a few twists to keep things interesting but it doesn't change to much. The camera goes from being okay to completely sucking this seems especialy true in the Noir levels where timing and angle are everything in most cases. Web controls seem tacked on and are out right awful to use and none of the characters has much of a jump. Each of the Spider-men have a special power or gameplay style all to themselves. 2099 can slow things down and parts in his levels that induce combat in a freefall. Noir sticks to the shadows and takes down enemies without being seen. Ultimate unleashes pent up rage giving a wider range of attacks.
The combat is pretty responsive, combos flow easily and while each Spider-man has a deferent delivery the combat through each level feels familiar as you progress through the game. One major problem with it is that it is difficult to change direction and if you utilize the defensive stance which allows you to dodge just about everything just by holding in a button you can't just keep attacking through hails of bullet fire and since gunmen have the annoying tendency to surround you in large groups this seriously limits offensive ability. Also it feels much of the time that the targeting system wasn't thought out much as every movment you make will change your target and the timing on alot of combos has to be absolutely perfect or they don't work.
Time is a big factor as well baring getting all the colectibles and repeating the levels on higher dificulty I beat the game in less than 24 hours but it will definatly take longer than that if you want every upgrade and alternate suits art and 3d figures. All in all its a good game even if its not the best Spider-man game out there. 3 out of 5.
